Nina's Cats - NPO Here's how Nina's Cats in Potchefstroom got started - Nina Burger, a former SAA air hostess, started feeding the feral cats on the Nort West University campus in 1999 while being employed there. One of the employees informed her of a mommy cat and three small kittens living behind her office building. Always having a love for the cats and not being able to leave them to their own devices, she started feeding them daily and over the weekends. As the weeks and months went by, Nina the " katte Tannie " as she became affectionately known by the students, discovered over 57 places where stray cats seemed to be living and she started to feed there as well. In 2011 she was still working full time at the NWU and would feed until 1 or 2 o'clock in the evenings. She started a project to keep the feedings on campus going and they helped to put up feeders all over, this way it was more manageable for her and people were being recruited to help feed the campus cats and Tannie Nina could focus on the cats outside of campus. When she retired at the NWU she started feeding daily and her routing began at 14:00 in the afternoons and usually ends around 20:00 at night. At the moment there are between 360 and 400 feral cats in Potch. Of those 400 cats, only about 5% have been neutered. Usually out of her own pocket or some donations. An NPO was registered to help raise the much needed funds to assist Nina's Cats . The goal is to spay and neuter 100% of the population and to use the NPO and its donations to maintain the feeding and medical needs of the cats, as Nina can no longer sustain the project on her own dime. Nina's Cats need about R90 000 to get the whole population neutered and in doing so, control the breeding and spread of the cats. Even though our goal is to someday eradicate the population of feral cats living on the streets, the reality is that " dumping " is a real thing. More and more kittens that are no longer cute or desirable being dumped at one or more of the feeding grounds. Older cats are also left to their own devices when the students move back home and decide that they cannot take their kitty with. Our work will also include educating the youth of Potchefstroom of proper care for their cats to prevent the spread of illness and also when it is an appropriate age to neuter/spay and why it is best to do so. With your help I am positive we can make a remarkable difference.
