I contacted Chancor Engraving using the automated message provided when requesting a quote. I then received an automated response saying they were unavailable. By the time I saw it, I had already managed to come right elsewhere, so I simply replied politely to say so and thanked them. What followed was completely unexpected. The owner told me I could have checked the business hours on the website, commented that I had apparently taken offence at the “??”, and criticized me for not introducing myself, adding that in their day this was called “good manners.” What made the interaction even more uncomfortable was that the owner then used my name and surname and asked whether I was related to a particular family. I found this particularly inappropriate and intrusive. My family connections had absolutely nothing to do with my request for a quotation, and I do not understand why a business enquiry needed to become personal in that way. I had not complained about their opening hours, demanded a response, or been rude. I had simply used the company's quote enquiry message and later said that I had already come right elsewhere. Being lectured about manners and then questioned about my family in response to such a basic customer enquiry felt condescending, personal and very unprofessional. I certainly did not expect to have my surname or possible family connections brought into a conversation about engraving or printing. Unfortunately, based on this interaction, I would not feel comfortable supporting this business.
